Portuguese among those detained in Namibia for illegal fishing on an Angolan boat

A Portuguese citizen is among three detained in December in Namibia for alleged illegal fishing, when he was on board an Angolan vessel with 18 other crew members, an official Angolan source told Lusa.

Tara Lambourne:

According to a source from Angola's national fisheries inspection service, the Portuguese citizen is the captain of the ship and a South African and an Angolan are also detained.

"We are in permanent contact with the shipowner, who has already appointed a lawyer, who is following the process", said the source in statements to the Lusa agency.

According to the source, Angola and Namibia have a protocol, which will be the guide for this situation, but the Angolan State should not interfere in the laws of the Namibian State.

"The infraction, if it is proven, within what the rules provide for as a sanction, they will be convicted from that perspective, if it is proven that they are innocent they will be acquitted, let's wait," he said.

The source guaranteed that all the rights and obligations of the crew are safeguarded, stressing that "they are not suffering discrimination or other situations outside of what constitutes human rights", with everything being taken care of.

The case is being followed by the national fisheries directorate and the National Maritime Agency.

The vessel was reported on December 19th 12 miles from Namibian waters, and was carrying 19 crew members, 15 of Angolan nationality, two Senegalese, one South African and one Portuguese.

The captain and his assistants were accused of the crime of illegal fishing and have already appeared in court, but were denied bail, meaning they were detained in custody, awaiting trial on February 8th.

"They will go to trial, I can't predict what the penalty will be", because Namibia, unlike Angola, criminalizes these infractions, said the same source.

According to a person responsible for the regional fisheries inspection center in the southern region of Angola, Vicente Neto, the vessel was reported on December 19th 12 miles from Namibian waters, and was carrying 15 crew members of Angolan nationality, one Portuguese, two Senegalese and one South African. -African.

"The information we have is that the vessel called Lucimar, licensed in Angola, was reported in Namibian waters, 12 miles within Namibian waters" on suspicion of "attempted fishing", he said, quoted by Rádio Nacional de Angola.

The same source said that the Namibian authorities found the boat and, after inspecting it, suspected that "it was about to carry out fishing".
