Mota-Engil acquires company with interests in Angola to internationalize environmental business

Mota-Engil has completed the purchase process of SUMA, a waste collection, treatment and management company with business in Angola, from Urbaser, the Portuguese construction company announced. In return, it will sell its holdings in the industrial segment to Urbaser.

“Mota-Engil informs that regulatory authorizations have been obtained and the necessary conditions precedent to complete the transaction with Urbaser, announced and detailed in March 2023, have been met,” he said in a statement.

In this sense, Mota-Engil now owns the entirety of SUMA, as well as the shares held by this company in its “participation vehicles in the collection and urban services, treatment and recovery of waste segments”, as well as the subsidiaries in Angola, Brazil, Mozambique and Oman.

In Angola, SUMA's journey began in 2008 with the signing of contracts in the areas of MSW (Urban Solid Waste) collection, urban cleaning and environmental education in the province of Luanda. In 2009 the company opened an environmental education center in the capital and extended services to the province of Benguela and began collecting MSW and urban cleaning in Sumbe, Kwanza Sul province, in 2013.

The Mota‑Engil Group began its activity in the Environment sector in 1995 in Portugal through SUMA, in the urban waste management and collection segment. According to Mota-Engil, the completion of this operation will allow it to accelerate the execution of its strategic plan.

In March, the international waste management group Urbaser notified the Competition Authority (AdC) of the acquisition of exclusive control over a vehicle company, to be formed, that will own SUMA's industrial waste business unit.

According to information available on the AdC website, the concentration operation consists of the acquisition, by Urbaser, “of exclusive control over a vehicle company to be formed that will hold SUMA's industrial waste business unit (“Industrial Waste NewCo ”), through the acquisition of a majority stake in its share capital from Mota-Engil, Ambiente e Serviços”.

Urbaser is the parent company of an international group operating in the urban services, waste treatment and water management sectors, headquartered in Spain, and controlled by Platinum Equity, LLC, an American private equity investment company. ') international.
