"The crime situation in Luanda is stable, with some incidences. Luanda is a cosmopolitan, dynamic city (...). We had a positive public security report on New Year's Eve, but we still have to highlight these isolated cases that end up in some way pinch and cause a kind of feeling of insecurity", said this Friday the spokesperson for the Police Command in Luanda, Superintendent Nestor Goubel.

Speaking to Lusa, following the murder on public roads of the well-known Angolan sociologist, commentator and university professor, Laurindo Vieira, on Thursday, in Talatona, Nestor said that efforts are underway to find the perpetrators of the crime.

Angolan society expressed shock over the death of the man who was also the rector of Gregório Semedo University, shot next to his vehicle, as he left a bank, in the Patriota area, municipality of Talatona, south of Luanda.

Images circulating on social media portray the sighs of the defeated man, after being allegedly shot by individuals on a motorbike.

The spokesperson for the Luanda Provincial Command of the National Police denied the lack of police patrolling in Talatona and assured that there was police in the same area where the teacher was shot, considering, however, that the action of the criminals was very quick.

"Further down there was a police force coming and going, it wasn't that the area was unguarded, the approach was quick, they shot the victim in the legs there, but it wasn't that the area was unpatrolled", he explained.

Measures are underway: "To find out who committed this crime, to clarify the family members and society", he said.

"Criminals will be held accountable," he assured.

Nestor Goubel also assured that the Ministry of the Interior's bodies continue to work "hard" for public order and tranquility.

"But, we have to look at these signs, taking into account not only the media coverage of these cases, but also in areas where crimes are imminent, especially violent ones", he concluded.

Laurindo Vieira, 60 years old, was also rector of the Gregório Semedo University, whose management expressed a deep feeling of regret and considered that he stood out as an "excellent and distinguished Angolan academic, whose legacy extends beyond the borders of science and academia".
