Brazil: João Lourenço condemns “anti-democratic acts”

The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, who also holds the rotating presidency of the CPLP, condemned this Sunday in a “vigorous and firm” way the “anti-democratic acts” by “Bolsonarist” supporters against institutions that represent Brazilian democracy.

:

"As President 'pro tempore' of the CPLP and as President of the Republic of Angola, I express the most vigorous and firm condemnation of the anti-democratic acts that are being practiced in Brazil, throughout today [Sunday], against institutions that represent and symbolize Brazilian Democracy", wrote João Lourenço, in a message posted on the Angolan Presidency page on the social network Facebook.

The head of state expressed the conviction that he will exercise his authority and "restore democratic order in the country without delay".

"We consider these manifestations regrettable and revealing a high degree of intolerance not compatible with the rules of the democratic game, in which the results legitimized by the popular vote must be recognized and accepted by all", wrote João Lourenço.

The President of Angola and of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) also recalled that the October presidential elections in Brazil "were recognized worldwide as free, fair and transparent, thus making no sense for the current claims".

The Brazilian President decreed federal intervention in Brasília after hundreds of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro invaded and vandalized the National Congress, the Planalto Palace and the Federal Supreme Court (STF), seats of the legislative, executive and judicial powers.

The demonstrators, who broke through the police protection barriers, are asking for military intervention to overthrow President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a week after his inauguration.

The Military Police managed, however, to regain control of the STF headquarters and the Brazilian head of state promised that all those responsible for the invasions will be punished.
