Biodiversity project presented in Cuando Cubango. Initiative is funded by the US

A biodiversity project in Cuando Cubango – financed by the government of the United States of America (USA), through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) – was presented in Menongue, this Wednesday, by the director of USAID in Angola, William Butterfield.

Budgeted at 17.5 million dollars, of which 10 million dollars will be financed by the private sector, the 'Ecosystems, Communities and Climate in Cubango-Okavango (ECCO)' project will last five years and is expected to launch within the first three months this year.

According to Angop, a delegation from USAID, led by William Butterfield, is working in Cuando Cubango – who met with the provincial governor José Martins, in order to discuss the next steps for the project to be carried out and the branches to choose for improve the quality of life of citizens.

On the occasion, William Butterfield, cited by Angop, guaranteed that this initiative intends to help the Government of Angola to safeguard local natural resources and continue with the preservation of the local environment in a sustainable way.

Among the intentions of the initiative are also the improvement of sustainable fishing, provision of clean energy as well as opportunities to increase the stimulation of agriculture and, consequently, the income of citizens in their daily sustainable development, writes Angop.

Furthermore, according to Angop, the project also has the objective of promoting the means of livelihood of citizens, through the safeguarding of biodiversity, among others.

William Butterfield, cited by Angop, also informed that the US executive is committed to attracting the attention of the private sphere to this initiative, due to the interest already expressed by this group, taking into account the existence of several opportunities offered by this region.

José Martins, also quoted by Angop, asked USAID to work with the population, especially in Cuito Cuanavale, Dirico, Mavinga and Rivungo, where the KAZA initiative will be carried out, so as to reduce poaching and the slaughter of trees, through regional incentives for the sustainable self-development of the region's population.
