Border between Angola and Namibia reopens next week

The border between Angola and Namibia is expected to reopen next Tuesday, February 1, after having been closed for almost two years – since March 2020 – due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The information was provided by Francisco Pereira Furtado, Minister of State and Head of the Security House of the President of the Republic, in Ondjiva (Cunene), during a meeting between the two countries.

Cited by Angop, the official explained that both governments will define their own rules with the aim of guaranteeing safety in the movement of people as well as controlling the spread of covid-19 between countries.

Thus, he made it known that rules should be imposed "so that there is discipline, so that the behavior" of citizens "does not jeopardize the claim to successfully develop towards common stability".

Among the various measures, Francisco Pereira Furtado said it was important to implement the obligation to present a test with a negative result (valid up to 72 hours before) as well as the presentation of the complete vaccination certificate.

He also warned that violators of the measures imposed will have to pay fines in both countries.

"We must maintain these principles to protect our populations, guarantee the security of both countries, stability and development of their economies", he considered.

He also called for a strengthening of surveillance at the border, since during the time it was closed, several people who violated the rule were detained.

Alberto Kahana, Namibia's Interior Minister for Immigration and Security Protection, also quoted by Angop, assured that, on his side, the conditions are created to reopen the border.

He also considered that the opening of the border will allow Angolans to purchase various products as well as access medical assistance and medicines.

"The disease is among everyone, the most important thing is to continue to apply prevention measures, so that both nations are well protected," he said.
