Six food items reach self-sufficiency in the country

According to the Agricultural Campaign Report (RCA) 2019/2020, six products reached self-sufficiency in the country: cassava, sweet potatoes, bananas, pineapples, eggs and goat meat.

According to the document, the quantity of these six goods produced in the country is sufficient to respond to market needs, without the need to import.

According to the report, cited by Angop, although there is no specific data to assess the real amount of agricultural products sought annually by consumers in the country, it was concluded that, in the period in question, the share of roots and tubers was the one that more evident, through the planting of cassava, potatoes and sweet potatoes (11,823,263 tons).

For the period 2018/2019, production increased by around 6.2 percent, the document indicates.

The RCA states that the tubers were collected in an area of ​​982,532 hectares, in the provinces of Uíge (20.9 percent), Malanje (14.9 percent), Cuanza Sul (9.3 percent), Moxico (8.5 percent). percent) and Lunda Sul (6.4 percent).

From potatoes, cassava and sweet potatoes, the production of cassava (9,592,870 tons) stood out. This is followed by sweet potatoes, with 1,749,832 tons and potatoes with 480,560 tons, writes Angop.

As for fruits, the report indicates that they were collected in an area of ​​243,883 hectares, in the provinces of Benguela (21.2 percent), Cuanza Sul (15.9 percent), Uíge, (9.8 percent), Bengo (7.7 percent) and Cabinda (7.4 percent).

In this slice, banana production stood out (4,104,583 tons). According to Angop, until 2020, the country was the largest African producer of this fruit and seventh in the world.

Another highlight is pineapple with 637,630 tons and citrus fruit with 436,086 tons.

The RCA also reveals that, in the period in question, 3,071,085 tons of five cereals were produced: corn, millet, sorghum, rice and wheat. Here, corn stands out, with a production of 2,972,177 tons.

Of the various points in the report, coffee production is also highlighted. In the period under review, 12,100 tonnes of Mabuba coffee and 6050 tonnes of commercial coffee were produced, representing a growth of 14 percent compared to the previous period.

Regarding exports, the report reveals that bananas and some marine species were the most evident.
