PR conveyed hope, but “was kidnapped by regime radicals”, considers UNITA

UNITA, the Angolan opposition, considered this Thursday that President João Lourenço, “who transmitted messages of hope, unity and reconciliation” in the first three years of government, was “kidnapped by the regime’s radicals” and “since 2020, Angola has regressed”.

:

"We have already asked ourselves, several times, where is the President [of the Republic] of 2017, 2018 and 2019? Where is our President? That President who had a message, a speech of hope, unity, conciliation, where is that President", questioned this Thursday the chairman of the parliamentary group of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Liberty Chiyaka.

The politician, who was speaking this Thursday at a press conference in Luanda, about the country's socio-political situation and the initiatives of his parliamentary group, said he was "concerned", claiming that the President of the Republic, who "was in dialogue with UNITA and with civil society", was "kidnapped by the regime's radicals".

"Our concern at this very moment is that the President of the Republic has been kidnapped, we are worried, society as a whole must unite and ask: who kidnapped our President in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Who kidnapped?" to question.

In the country, "there was a stance of significant openness, significant freedom, a general state of greater confidence, but since 2020, unfortunately, we have gone backwards, because the rise in management positions of radicals is visible and it is evident that this group of radicals who kidnapped the President of the Republic", he stressed.

For Liberty Chiyaka, this "group" promotes "instability, manipulates the President's position or opinion".

According to the parliamentary leader of UNITA, the President of the Republic who, in 2017, 2018 and 2019, "conveyed messages of hope and unity, needs to be rescued".

Chiyaka recalled, in the speech, that João Lourenço, when he began his term, received the then president of UNITA, Isaías Sakamuva, congratulated the current president of UNITA, when he was elected in 2019, "but since then, the leaders have distanced themselves ".

"This is our concern, because we want the President of the Republic back, we want to contribute to the consolidation of the democratic and lawful State, but the institutions have to dialogue", pointed out the politician of the 'maninhos'.

The president of the UNITA parliamentary group also said that, in the last two years, "democracy in Angola has regressed, the foundations of the rule of law have been attacked, electoral promises have not been fulfilled and the country's social situation has worsened".

The cost of living "rises every day and people are tired, saturated and desperate," he pointed out.

The covid-19 pandemic, which has been underway for almost two years, "cannot be an excuse for the poor governance of 20 years of peace", he considered.

"The vicissitudes of economic cycles cannot serve as an excuse to restrict rights and reduce democratic freedoms", concluded Liberty Chiyaka.
