President condemns acts of vandalism: “What happened on Monday was a true act of terror”

The President of the Republic condemned the acts of vandalism that took place on Monday, in Luanda, on the first day of the strike called by the taxi drivers, saying that they “point to the materialization of a macabre plan of ungovernability”.

Speaking at the opening of the 12th session of the Council of Ministers, the head of state said that "what happened on Monday was a true act of terror, whose fingerprints left at the scene of the crime are quite visible".

"They point to the materialization of a macabre plan of ungovernability through the promotion of the vandalization of public and private assets, incitement to disobedience and rebellion in an attempt to subvert democratically established power", he indicated.

João Lourenço also stressed that it was worth the fact that the authorities acted with "a lot of restraint": "We were grateful that the National Police acted with great restraint and that the private, individual and collective entities directly harmed behaved as true patriots, tolerant and responsible".

In his speech, the President also said that for future generations there is a "responsibility to preserve for eternity the two greatest achievements of the Angolan people, achieved with great sacrifice over time, national independence and peace and national reconciliation".

He further appealed to all citizens to "refrain from acts of retaliation". "Whoever has seen their heritage vandalized, burned or destroyed must not pay in the same currency because no one is authorized to do justice in their own hands. Let us hand over this responsibility of justice to other competent bodies of the State".

He also guaranteed that the general elections will take place in August 2022 "in an environment of full security for voters and observers", and highlighted, in a message to his political opponents: "In Angola, the only possible and legitimate way to contest political power is through the democratic way of elections".

The Chief Executive regretted the stoppage of "a small part" of taxis in Luanda, stating that the Executive had "promptly" responded to the main demand of the representative associations of the class, which had to do with the reduction in the capacity of taxis due to the covid-19. -19, saying that "it served as a pretext for political exploitation with a view to creating the anger of citizens using these means".

João Lourenço concluded his speech by expressing "indignation, repulsion and public condemnation of Angolan society in unison", against the moral authors, mentors, organizers and performers of last Monday's acts.

It is recalled that the capital was the scene of several contempt and vandalism on Monday, the first day of the taxi drivers' strike, with 29 people being arrested.
