1.º de Agosto eliminated from African Champions League

The 1.º de Agosto was eliminated this Tuesday from the African Champions League after losing (0-1) against South Africa's Kaizer Chiefs. After the defeat, the 'military' will be in isolation for 15 days, as South Africa is one of the countries affected by the new variant of covid-19.

Although there were some opportunities to score, the 1.º de Agosto failed to turn the scoreboard around and failed to qualify for the group stage of the African Champions League.

At 38 minutes, Mabululo was isolated at the entrance of the area, having the opportunity to score in favor of 1.º de Agosto. However, the player failed, having kicked to the side of the goal. Two minutes later (40'), Castro opened the scoring in favor of the South Africans.

Faced with the disadvantage, writes Angop, the coach of the 'military' decided to strengthen the attack. However, it was not enough, and the Kaizer Chiefs managed to defend and control the marker until the end of the match.

In the 86th minute, 1.º de Agosto had the opportunity to equal the marker: Zini headed the ball towards the opponent's goal, but the South African goalkeeper managed to defend.

As in the first leg, which took place in Johannesburg, the two teams tied (0-0), only the victory ensured the presence of the Angolans, for the second consecutive year, in the group stage of the African Champions League.

After the defeat, the 1.º de Agosto will be stopped for 15 days. As South Africa is one of the countries affected by the new variant of covid-19, the players, coaches and leaders of the 'military' will be quarantined for two weeks in order to prevent contagion of the virus.

This measure is part of the recommendations of the African Football Confederation (CAF).
