Former MPLA Secretary General warns that "surprises" will still arise in the fight against impunity in the country

The former MPLA secretary general advised this Thursday, in a debate on impunity in the National Assembly, for many not to clap their hands, "because many surprises are still to come," lacking in knowing "who will be next.

Álvaro de Boavida Neto, currently a member of the MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola), spoke in the debate on "Combating Impunity as a Primordial Factor for Good Governance", held in the National Assembly, at the proposal of the majority party.

"I advise many of us not to clap our hands, because many surprises are still to come, for the ride of the chariot in the society in general. The question that doesn't shut up, who will be next", said the deputy.

For Álvaro de Boavida Neto, "the theme suggests reflection, consideration and objectivity, especially the new learning of loyalty, honesty and patriotism, regardless of context, constituting a capital imperative.

According to the deputy, the sense to be privileged over impunity must and should be that of equal justice for all, emphasizing that this matter cannot be treated "with resentment".

"Much less with the hardening of our hearts or even stratifying society, with good and bad citizens, without well understanding the contexts that Angola has subjected itself," he said.

The former MPLA Secretary General, between 2018 and 2019, admitted: "There were small lootings, yes! Medium lootings, yes! Big lootings, right! For good understanding there were robberies".

"At a certain stage in our history, the abnormal became normal, or rather, the immoral was also an unpublicized pandemic, which a minority with the strength of political power, with the bonds of influence, told the people that everything was normal and moral, starting from the atrophy of families, and today we are living this chaos through which we are called to build the new national consciousness, where impunity is in the first place indisputably," he stressed.

The deputy said that "a lot of prayer" is what Angola needs today "due to looting, robberies, hoarding, economic and social plunder.

"What is certain is that these gentlemen have pawned our sovereignty, they have compromised the future of the populations to come, with debts that we will need many years to repay them, in the event that we have oil on the rise," he added.

According to Álvaro de Boavida Neto, the lack of schools, hospitals, drinking water, electricity, roads, development of the productive and economic sector "is a reflection of our selfishness, being a disproportionate consequence of the ambition of some compatriots.

"All together we have done our people a lot of harm, because only the heroic generosity of the Angolan people can be the solution for the good of our motherland. Thousands of people have died, many people suffer from hunger, live in misery and accumulate dead dreams," he stressed.

Álvaro de Boavida Neto spoke of "mercy", which should be called to the people, for not having "been fair to them.

About the youth, he asked that their fragility and youthful enthusiasm are used "to sow and feed hatred, which will make blood sprout, many more deaths and will not have the progress and development that so much" wants.

"Young people have dreams, they need to live, no one has the right to postpone, no more suffering for a different Angola, but the same for everyone," he appealed.

During the debate, the deputies were unanimous on the need to fight impunity, and the president of the National Assembly, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, highlighted the consensus reached.

"We left here clearer about the meander of the fight against impunity, corruption and the need for good governance and I think there is consensus that this fight should continue, we should all contribute to maintain and strengthen good governance," said the president of the National Assembly, recalling that "it is a fight for all".

"It's a continuous process, there must be courage, transparency and persistence," he stressed, praising the debate, which recorded "some excesses," but what, he considered, "is normal, is democracy".
