In the list of candidate words for the prize were the words "agriculture", "autarchic", "coronavirus", "education", "nationalization", "demonstration", "industrialization", "quarantine" and "violence".
"Pandemic" followed the words "VAT", "hope", "resignation" and "crisis", elected in 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016, respectively.
The "Word of the Year" initiative is promoted by Plural Editores and aims to "highlight the lexical richness and creative dynamism of the Portuguese language, a living and precious heritage of all those who express themselves in it, thus emphasizing the importance of words and their meanings in the individual and social production of the senses with which we interpret and build life itself.
