In the list of candidates for the prize were also the words "environment", "counterproductive", "equity", "future", "marimbondo", "peculato", "rescheduling", "resilience" and "drought".
The word "VAT" won with 40 percent of the votes. In second place was the word "resilience" which won 31 percent of the votes, followed by the word "marimbondo" which won 14 percent of the votes.
"VAT" followed the words "hope", "resignation" and "crisis", elected in 2018, 2017 and 2016 respectively.
The "Word of the Year" initiative is promoted by Plural Editores and aims to "highlight the lexical richness and creative dynamism of the Portuguese language, a living and precious heritage of all those who express themselves in it, thus emphasizing the importance of words and their meanings in the individual and social production of the senses with which we interpret and build life itself".
