‘Ilumina Angola’: government launches project to 'illuminate' communications and improve services

The government launched, this Friday, a project that aims to increase and expand the coverage of communications services in the country. The town of Maria Teresa, in the province of Cuanza Norte, was the first to benefit from this national roaming project, called 'Ilumina Angola', which will then reach Bengo.

As part of the inauguration of the project, the governor of Cuanza Norte, João Diogo Gaspar, explained that the initiative will not only provide Internet services through the national Angosat-2 satellite, but will also provide electricity to that community.

"Today [Friday] we inaugurated the first site of the National Roaming Project 'Ilumina Angola'. This pilot site was built in the Maria Teresa area, in the municipality of Cambambe, which, in addition to providing Internet service through Angosat-2, provides electricity to this rural community, using photovoltaic panels, clean and sustainable energy", reads the note that the provincial governor shared on his Facebook page and to which VerAngola had access.

The provincial governor said it was a first step and that more villages will benefit from this project.

"This is the first step, more villages will benefit from the project, which is an initiative of the Government of Angola, through the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, in partnership with Huawei", wrote Diogo Gaspar.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, the Maria Teresa area was the first to benefit from this project, which has direct support from Huawei, "followed by the location of Bula Tumba", in Bengo.

With this launch, Angola gains the "first system at national level that will allow access to voice and Internet services through national roaming in areas that are difficult to access and with limitations in the regular supply of electricity".

The guardianship also clarifies that 'Ilumina Angola' concerns "an Executive initiative to directly support the work and services provided by telecommunications operators, which aims, among others, to facilitate regular access to voice and data services usually offered by operators, to a greater number of popular customers" in the country.

In addition to helping to improve communications services, the project will also contribute to improving electricity supply. This is because, taking into account its characteristics, the project will use the "surplus electrical energy produced by photovoltaic solar panels, to benefit homes around the area in which the communications sites will be installed, supplying electrical energy on a regular basis".

In the case of the Maria Teresa location, the note says, approximately 40 families will benefit from regular access to electricity.

In addition to Huawei, this initiative is also supported by the Communications Support Fund (FADCON), Angola Telecom, the National Space Management Office (GGPEN), the Angola Communications Institute (INACOM) and Infrasat.

It is worth noting that, this week, Matias Borges, national director of Telecommunications and Information Technologies, said that, after Cuanza Norte and Bengo, the idea is to continue expanding this project to other more remote locations in the country.
