Mozambican police arrest man wanted in Angola for drug trafficking

Mozambican police arrested, on Thursday, a man wanted since 2019 by national authorities for international drug trafficking, announced the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic), which confirmed shortly after that the Angolan will be extradited.

The 51-year-old man of Angolan nationality was detained in Maputo, the Mozambican capital, after fleeing his country in September 2019, when “he was serving a final sentence in 2017, to a prison sentence of more than 10 years for committing the crime of international drug trafficking”, says a note from Sernic, sent to the media.

According to the Mozambican authorities, the detainee presented several identification documents, including those from Mozambique, Brazil, Namibia and Seychelles, with different names than those in Angola and, in others, with a different photograph.

The action could also constitute the “practice of the crime of forgery of documents”, warned Sernic, noting that the case will follow legal procedures aimed at extraditing the man.

“This is a sign that the Mozambican authorities are attentive to all movements of citizens who intend to use the country as a refuge, as well as to nationals who become involved in the world of crime”, concluded Sernic.

To Lusa, Hilário Lole, spokesperson for the same Mozambican entity, confirmed the extradition of the suspect. “Administrative procedures are now underway to extradite the same individual. As soon as everything is organized, he will be extradited,” he said.
