Commitment to expanding renewable energies reiterated by the PCA of the IRSEA

The Government's commitment to achieving 60 percent electrification by 2025, through the renewable energy expansion project, was reiterated by Luís Mourão, chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA) of the Regulatory Institute of Electricity and Water Services (IRSEA).

The official said that there are initiatives in the portfolio that will change the current energy matrix used in the country.

According to Angop, it concerns the photovoltaic plants to be built in Huíla, Lubango municipality, Namibe and in the eastern region of Angola, having highlighted the role that financial entities and private partners may play in the transitional management procedure of the matrix, because of the high costs of running the program.

According to Luís Mourão, cited by Angop, technological advances are fundamental to enable the modification of the model in the energy market, directing companies towards a greater focus on reducing waste and taking faster decisions.

"In the past we talked about alternative energies, but with the continuous and current growth of renewable sources in the world, they ceased or it is intended that they cease to be alternatives to become the basis of the energy matrix in the world and Angola does not escape this pretension", he said, cited by Angop.

He also took the opportunity to mention that the country has been consuming energy based on fossil fuels for years, which cause a greater emission of greenhouse gases, eventually hastening the consequences of climate change.

Thus, he considered that the energy transition is assumed as an opportunity, as it is linked to the change in the structure of the energy matrix in Angola for clean energy sources, writes Angop.

The statements were made this Tuesday, on the sidelines of the International Forum on Renewable Energies. According to Angop, the event will take place between 13 and 15 December with the motto "Transition to Clean and Renewable Energies" and with the participation of representatives from 12 States of the SADC region.
