Covid-19: Africa with 395 more deaths and 20,092 infected in 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 395 deaths due to covid-19 and added 20,092 new cases in the last 24 hours, reaching a total of 57,817 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, according to official data.

According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), the African continent has now registered a total of 2,449,754 people infected since the beginning of the pandemic in the 55 member states of the African Union.

The number of recovered in the last 24 hours was 16,110, for a total of 2,073,214.

Southern Africa is, among the five African regions, the most affected, having exceeded one million cases of infection (1,002,999) and reached 25,791 registered deaths. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by covid-19 on the continent, accounts for a total of 892,813 infections and 24,011 deaths due to the disease.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 848,464 cases of infection and 22,085 fatalities.

East Africa records 304,405 infections and 5686 deaths, in West Africa the number of infections is 224,022 and that of registered deaths is 3013, while Central Africa records 69,684 cases and 1242 deaths, just two more than those recorded last Saturday .

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 7015 dead and 123,701 infected, followed by Morocco, which counts 6,804 fatal victims and 409,746 infected, a figure three times higher than that of Egypt.

Among the six most affected countries are also Tunisia, which exceeded 4 thousand deaths (4032) and 115,966 infected, Algeria, with 2640 deaths and 93,933 cases, Ethiopia, with 1831 fatalities and 118,481 cases, and Kenya, with 1618 deaths and 93,405 infected.

Regarding Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registers 382 deaths and 16,484 cases, followed by Mozambique (145 deaths and 17,256 cases), Cape Verde (110 deaths and 11,502 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5214 cases), Guinea -Bissau (44 dead and 2446 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 killed and 1009 cases).
