Covid-19: Africa with 310 more deaths and 10,881 infected in 24 hours

Africa has registered another 310 deaths due to covid-19 and added 10,881 new cases in the last 24 hours, reaching a total of 56,647 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, according to official data.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the African continent now has a total of 2,389,975 people infected since the beginning of the pandemic in the 55 member states of the African Union.

The number of people recovered in the last 24 hours was 10,021, for a total of 2,024,010.

Southern Africa is the most affected region, with 973,493 cases of infection and 25,204 registered deaths. In this region, South Africa, the country most affected by covid-19 in the continent, accounts for a total of 866,127 confirmed infections and 23,451 cases of deaths due to the disease.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 829,390 cases of infection and 21,649 deaths.

East Africa accounts for 299,056 cases and 5578 deaths, West Africa has 219,127 infections with 2986 deaths, while Central Africa has 68,909 cases and 1230 deaths, the same recorded on Saturday.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, registers 6943 deaths and 122,086 infected, followed by Morocco, which registers 6659 deaths, with more than 400,000 infected this Tuesday (400,826).

Among the six countries most affected are also Tunisia, with 3894 dead and 111,361 infected, Algeria, with 2609 deaths and 92,597 cases, Ethiopia, with 1809 deaths and 117,242 cases, and Kenya, with 1593 deaths and 92,055 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registered 372 deaths and 16,277 cases, followed by Mozambique (143 deaths and 17,002 cases), Cape Verde (110 deaths and 11,361 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5195 cases), Guinea-Bissau (44 deaths and 2444 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 1009 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,612,297 deaths from over 72.1 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a review by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
