Covid-19: Africa with 259 more deaths and 12,048 more infected in 24 hours

Africa recorded 259 deaths due to covid-19 and a further 12,048 new cases of infection in the last 24 hours, now accounting for 52,490 deaths caused by the new coronavirus, according to official data.

According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), the African continent now has 2,196,257 cases of infected people among the 55 members of the African Union.

The number of recovered in the last 24 hours was 9422, for a total of 1,862,685.

The largest number of cases of infection and deaths are registered in Southern Africa, with 894,706 cases and 23,359 fatalities.

In this region, South Africa, the continent's most affected country, accounts for 796,472 cases of infection and 21,709 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 753,910 people infected and 19,796 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 274,824 cases and 5252 deaths, in West Africa the number of infections is 206,865, with 2884 deaths, while Central Africa has 65,952 cases and 1199 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 6694 deaths and 116,724 infected, followed by Morocco, which accounts for 5915 fatalities and 359,844 cases of infection.

Among the six most affected countries are also Tunisia, with 99,280 infected and 3359 dead, Algeria, with 85,084 infections and 2447 dead, Ethiopia, with 110,984 cases and 1715 fatalities, and Nigeria, with 67,960 infected and 1177 deaths.

Regarding Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola accounts for 351 deaths and 15,319 cases, followed by Mozambique (132 deaths and 15,866 cases), Cape Verde (106 deaths and 10,867 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 dead and 5156 cases), Guinea -Bissau (44 dead and 2441 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 killed and 997 cases).
