Police reported 24 dead during Christmas season

At least 24 people have died in the country in cases of homicide, drowning and car accidents from December 24 until 12:30pm on Christmas Wednesday, December 25, police said.

The information was transmitted on Wednesday by the director of the Institutional Communication and Press office of the general police command, Orlando Bernardo, saying that during the Christmas period 148 crimes occurred and 107 citizens were arrested.

Speaking at a press conference on the public safety situation in the country on Christmas Eve, the sub-commissioner pointed out that despite the numbers, the night of the Christmas eve was "calm and quiet", but advised citizens to avoid consumption excessive alcoholic beverages.

According to the police officer, five of the deaths were due to homicides, with two cases already clarified. Were also 28 bodily offenses, with the provinces of Luanda, Bié and Benguela leading the criminal indexes.

In the area of ​​road accidents, the police recorded 52 road accidents resulting in 12 deaths and 96 injuries.

The Civil Protection and Fire Protection Service was also in action and recorded 14 occurrences, half of which were deaths, including four by drowning, two suicides by hanging and one death as a result of the collapse of a residence.

Regarding border surveillance, police questioned 294 citizens, mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo and repatriated 129.

About 60,000 staff, 18,000 of them in Luanda, were deployed to ensure the festive season in the country.
