"We are registering since December 15th a very rapid increase in cases of covid-19", said Helga Freitas, in statements to Angolan public radio, when confirming the presence of a virus in Luanda.

Helga Freitas said that "the vaccination is probably having its effect".

"We must not forget that we have the new variant, Ómicron, in circulation in the world, which is five times faster in transmitting the disease than Delta, so people must have their vaccinations (...) and complete the scheme of vaccination, this is important," he stressed.

Regarding the virus, the national director of Public Health said that the country has community circulation of the SARS-COV-2 virus, "so the first diagnosis that is put forward is covid-19".

According to Helga Freitas, people who in recent days have symptoms such as headaches, fevers, sore throat, muscle pain, should immediately go to a health unit to confirm the diagnosis.

"It is true that it could be a simple virus, but it has to be confirmed, so they must go to a health unit to confirm the diagnosis, it could be a virus or covid-19 and then yes, it is already more critical, because it is a person who will transmit it to other people and this is the procedure that all people should have," he said.

Angola registered, in the last 24 hours, 480 new cases of covid-19, without notification of deaths, and 57 recovered.

The country has a total of 66,566 confirmed cases, 1738 deaths, 63,879 recovered and 949 active, since the beginning of the pandemic in the country in March 2020.
