“Nossa Senhora da Loja do Chinês”: new film from Geração 80 premiers in Rotterdam

Written and directed by Ery Claver, “Nossa Senhora da Loja do Chinês” is the latest fiction feature film signed by Angolan production company Geração 80. The film will have its world premiere in January 2022 at the 21st edition of the Festival International Film Festival in Rotterdam.

The work debuts in the 'Bright Future' category, which focuses on the selection of emerging talent who work with original themes and an individual style, according to a statement sent to VerAngola by the producer.

This is the second Geração 80 film to premiere at the festival, after the premiere of "Ar Condicionado", made by Fradique in 2020, also in the same category.

Making yet another debut at this festival is considered especially important by the producer, who sees this event as more than a film festival. "The vivacity of adding other languages, the concern to bring independent cinema from various parts of the world and the daring to break with some traditions of the great European festivals", are reasons for prominence, they refer.

The film is the first fiction feature film by Ery Claver, a director whose recording set is the street, the urban and interpersonal relationships, the human/character at the heart of the story.

"This film is essentially about the times we live in. If reality allows itself this paradox, then we fictionists are sleeping and we are not even dreaming. If reality does not accept lies, it must at least know how to live with the allusions, and allude, or imitate reality", says the director.

"Nossa Senhora da Loja do Chinê" was filmed entirely in Luanda, "a complex city, with many layers, several times and infinite ways of living". So is the film, says the producer.

The feature film presents different perspectives on the same object and is a continuation of Generation 80's commitment to telling Angolan stories, producing independent and author cinema, they say.

Synopsis:

When a Chinese merchant brings a unique sacred plastic image of Our Lady to a Luanda neighborhood, a grieving mother seeks peace, an attentive barber starts a new cult, and a disoriented young man seeks revenge for his lost friend.

This bizarre urban tale will reveal a family and a city facade filled with resentment, greed and tragedy.
