According to a note from LAR, the consortium that manages the railway line between the Port of Lobito and Luau, with connections to the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, the wagons were purchased in South Africa and have the capacity to transport 40-foot containers or two containers 20 feet each.

These wagons, he adds, will allow for the reinforcement of operational capacity, in terms of volume and railway capacity, for the transport of commercial cargo in the coming years.

This is the first in a series of deliveries scheduled until 2026, an investment that "evidences Lobito Atlantic Railway's commitment to modern and safe equipment, aligned with its growth plan and the need to meet market demand", according to the press release.

The LAR consortium, which includes Trafigura, a market leader in the global commodities industry, the Portuguese Mota-Engil, an infrastructure construction and management company, and Vecturis SA, an independent railway operator, was granted a 30-year operating concession, management and maintenance of the Benguela Railway line.

LAR also operates the Porto do Lobito Mineral Terminal, which connects to the railway line, providing a faster and more efficient service in one of the most uncongested ports on the Atlantic coast.

The document highlights that this railway enabled the existence and operation of a faster western route for the transport of minerals and metals produced in the Congolese Copper Belt, and a separate pre-feasibility study is underway, supported by the United States of America and by the European Union, for the extension of the Lobito railway line to the north of the neighboring Republic of Zambia.
