In a statement, to which VerAngola had access, the Angolan Federation of Mixed Martial Arts (FAMMA) announced "that the national team achieved a historic feat at the MMA World Championship", since by winning nine medals (one gold, two silver and six bronze), "Angola became the first African country to reach this level of excellence in a world competition of the sport".
The gold came from the 'hands' of Maria Kitoco, who beat the host Makhliyo Abdumannobova.
"The highlight was the athlete Maria Kitoco, who won the gold medal in the 74.8 kilogram category in juniors, beating the host Makhliyo Abdumannobova and bringing the country its first gold medal in a MMA World Championship", reads the statement.
Athletes Clarence Francisco, in the 79-kilogram category, and Ana Fernanda, in the 79.4-kilogram category, also stood out, winning silver medals.
"Athletes Nkunga Vakanda (56 kilograms), Milfa Nicolau (88 kilograms), Maria Liberal (70.3 kilograms), Jeorgina Ludmila (79.4 kilograms), Esperança Pereira (56.7 kilograms) and Linara Costa completed the Angolan performance by winning bronze medals", said FAMMA.
According to the federation, "this historic result not only broke the record of the two previous editions, held in Serbia and Albania, where Angola won two and three silver and bronze medals, respectively, but also positions the country as an emerging power in MMA worldwide".
The national delegation returns to the country this Tuesday.
But it is not only in MMA that Angola stands out, with the country's performance also standing out in jiu-jitsu. According to a statement from the Angolan Embassy in Abu Dhabi, to which VerAngola had access, in three days of the 'World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship', which takes place in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) until November 16, the country won 12 medals, five of which were gold.
"In terms of competition, in three days, Angola won five gold medals, five silver medals and two bronze medals for the teams Z1 Academy Angola and GF TEAM Angola", says the statement.
