The ministers of Foreign Affairs of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) pledged this Saturday to maintain dialogue and political consultation as a way of resolving the political crisis between the two countries.

This is one of the points of the final communiqué on the tripartite meeting between Rwandan, Congolese and Angolan diplomacy, which took place on Saturday in Luanda, and was released on Saturday night.

The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after the ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Rwanda, Vincent Biruta, and his counterpart from DR Congo, Christophe Lutundula Apala Pen'Apala, were received in audience by the President, João Lourenço, who is also currently chairing the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.

The objective was to relaunch the dialogue between the two countries in the face of the escalation of tension in recent weeks, with the M23 rebels, a movement that the authorities in Kinshasa say is supported by Rwanda, to gain control of several localities, which will have forced the exodus of more than 200 thousand people.

At the end of the meeting, the ministers also agreed on the definition of a timetable to accelerate the implementation of the Luanda roadmap of 6 July 2022, which aims to establish the path to peace and the immediate deployment of the ad-hoc verification mechanism in Goma (DR Congo).

The ministers pledged to continue efforts "for encouraging developments on the ground and to prepare the next tripartite summit", according to the statement.

It was also proposed to hold coordination meetings at all levels between the Luanda Process and the Nairobi Process, recommending that the mediation take steps in this direction.
