Angolan writer Boaventura Cardoso distinguished with the dstangola/Camões Literature Prize

Angolan writer Boaventura Cardoso received this Thursday, in Luanda, the dstangola/Camões Literature Prize, promoted by dstgroup, in partnership with the Camões institute, for the work “Margens e Travessias”, from 2021, announced the Portuguese institution.

According to the note, the award, a cash prize of 15,000 euros, will be given to Boaventura Cardoso, winner of the IV edition, in the corresponding amount in kwanzas.

Boaventura Cardoso, graduated in Social Sciences from the Pontifical University of São Tomaz de Aquino- "Angelicum", in Rome, is a founding member of the Union of Angolan Writers and author of several literary works.

The document emphasizes that the various works entered in the competition were analyzed by a reference jury, made up of professor Irene Guerra Marques (president), professor Manuel Muanza and journalist Carlos Ferreira, who was responsible for the analysis, choice and reasoning of the awarded work. .

"The award of the prize to the author Boaventura Cardoso is essentially based on the fact that it is a work that reflects, better than ever, a writer who has accustomed us, over the years, to an exhaustive work that constantly balances between a very rich, but also very disciplined", highlighted the award jury, quoted in the note.

"Between the imaginary, the realist, the religious, the musical (the refrain that runs through one of the main figures in his novel, in his life!), Boaventura Cardoso uses the same methods that made him one of the best prose writers in the History of Angolan Literature. : an iron discipline, a deep knowledge of reality, a lucid and intelligent observation of everything that is happening around him (around us...) and builds a novel that is fundamental for anyone who wants to know the Angola of the last half century ", added the jury.

They have already been winners of the dstangola/Camões Literature Prize, which distinguishes books published in poetry and prose by artists born in Angola, authors such as Zetho Cunha Gonçalves, in 2019, Pepetela, in 2020, and Benjamim M'Bakassy, ​​in 2021.

Also under the protocol signed in 2019 with Camões, Instituto da Cooperacao e da Língua, the dstangola reading room was created at the Portuguese Cultural Center in Luanda, which received thousands of books from the dstgroup, worth more than 12,500 euros.

A reinforcement of six thousand euros is already foreseen for this project, in each of the three subsequent years. Among the thousands of books there are titles by Portuguese authors, Portuguese-speaking authors, technical books and literature, among many other genres.

The collection of works by Boaventura Cardoso includes the short story books "Dizanga dya Muenhu (1977), "O Fogo da Fala" (1980) and "A Morte do Velho Kipacaça" (1987), from the novels "O Signo do Fogo" ( 1992), "Maio, Mês de Maria" (1997), "Mãe, Materno Mar" which was awarded the National Prize for Culture and Arts (2001), in the Literature discipline, and the novels "Noites de Vigília" (2012) ) and "Margins and Crossings" (2021).

The writer, currently a member of the National Assembly for the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), is an honorary member of the Academia Palmense de Letras (Brazilian State of Tocatins) and holds the Order of Cultural Merit in the Commander class, awarded by the President of the Federative Republic. of Brazil in 2006.

He is listed in "Novo Aurélio", by Aurélio Buarque de Holanda, having been from 2016 to 2020, the first president of the Angolan Academy of Letters of which he is a founding member.

The dstangola/Camões Literature Prize was launched in January 2019, in partnership with the Camões Institute.
