João Lourenço wants to ban offers and inaugurations during the electoral campaign period

The President of the Republic has recommended to the National Assembly the ban on inaugurations of projects and public works and also on offers likely to influence the purchase of votes during the electoral campaign.

:

The recommendation was expressed in a letter sent by the PR to the assembly, taking into account the request to reconsider the Draft Amendment to the Organic Law on General Elections.

According to Angop, in the letter, João Lourenço considers that allowing offers to be made to voters during the campaign is "accepting the possibility of subversion of the electoral truth".

The President defends that the fight against electoral corruption should be extended to other practices that, directly or indirectly, do not contribute to the moralization of society, in addition to being able to defraud the electoral truth.

João Lourenço recalls that the express prohibition of certain conducts is recommended during the electoral campaign – which takes place in the 30 days prior to voting day – namely the carrying out of inaugurations of undertakings and public works.

"I am convinced that we will reach greater levels of equality and electoral truth if, during the electoral campaign, competitors are removed from the possibility of inaugurating public works (...), except of course those that can be considered inherent to campaigns, as per example, the offer of electoral propaganda material", he says, cited by Angop.

In this way, the PR considers a reappraisal of the law pertinent, namely of "some solutions established by action or by omission", in order to ensure a "clear message aimed at the moralization of society".

Thus, and when sharing his reflection with Parliament, the head of State requests that, under the terms of article 124 of the National Constitution, a reconsideration of the matters be carried out, "in order to fill a gap regarding the openings and offers in the period campaign, within the framework of the law that amends Law number 36/11, of 21 December".

It is recalled that the National Assembly recently approved the Law of Amendment to the Organic Law on General Elections, which was later sent to the President of the Republic for enactment.
