Public Health: Angola has guaranteed vaccines for eligible population and reinforcement for the elderly

Angola already has guaranteed covid-19 vaccines for the entire eligible population and to boost immunity in the elderly, said the national director of Public Health, linking the slowdown in infections and deaths with the increase in vaccination.

The guarantee was given by Helga Freitas, who was speaking at a meeting organized by the Ministry of Finance, regarding the General State Budget (OGE) for 2022.

Asked about the steps to be taken after the vaccination of the eligible population in Angola (over 18 years old, with a total of 15.7 million people), Helga Freitas said that until November 13, 12,950,370 doses had been mobilized and that, from that point onwards from November 16th to January 2022, Angola has secured another 33,818,120 doses.

"We have guaranteed vaccines for our entire eligible population and we have vaccines to increase our population group and ensure boosters for the elderly and health professionals", said the director, revealing that 7.944,086 doses have been administered to date, corresponding to 36 percent coverage for the first dose and 14 percent for the second dose.

The percentage is higher in Luanda province, focus of the pandemic and where there are 66 percent of cases, where coverage reaches 64 percent for the first dose and 29 percent for the second dose.

"It is very encouraging, these results are probably linked to the slowdown that we have observed in our third wave," she stressed.

In recent weeks, the number of infections has significantly reduced with an average of 34 cases in the last seven days. The same happened with the number of deaths, there are days where no deaths are registered, like last Sunday.

The official highlighted that "vaccination, in addition to other prevention measures, namely the use of masks and social distancing", is a measure that "all countries are applying".

Helga Freitas explained that this is an expensive process for the country and that high-yield vaccination posts are expensive, so the strategy will change as coverage expands.

"Once we manage to reach 90 percent of the eligible population, we will obviously move to another strategy, which is to maintain vaccination at the health facility level, with a view to reducing costs, probably in the first or second quarters of next year, if these are reached results by March 2022", he added.
