Employment in Angola in the third quarter registered a drop of 2 percent compared to the previous quarter, with unemployment increasing by 7.9 percent, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

:

"Employment in the third quarter showed a decreasing variation of about 2.0 percent compared to the second quarter, in the same period unemployment registered a growth of 7.9 percent" compared to the previous period, reads a note released in Luanda.

The document points out that, comparing the third period of this year with the same period of 2020, "there was a growing variation of 1.3 percent for employment, [and] also a growth of 0.4 percent for unemployment."

The simultaneous growth of employment and unemployment is explained by the calculation basis of this survey carried out on households, as the economically active population rose by 5.5 percent from 15.3 million to 16.1 million in the third quarter of 2020 and the third quarter of 2021.

The survey results "reveals a 3.1 percent increase in the workforce (490,132 people), estimated at 16,165,528 people available for the labor market, representing an activity rate of 91.8 percent, lower value by 1.6 percentage points, compared to the results of the second quarter of 2021 (90.2 percent)", says the statement.

The employed population was estimated at 10.6 million people, decreasing by 0.6 percent, and the employment rate stood at 60.5 percent, decreasing by 1.2 percentage points from the previous quarter (61.7 percent), said INE.

More than half of the Angolan population, that is, 54.2 percent, works in the primary sector, comprising the areas of agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fishing, with self-employment continuing to absorb most of the employed population, nearly one in three.
