Lenders see Angola in 1.6 percent economic recession this year

The economic research department of the International Financial Institute (IFI), which represents debt creditors worldwide, forecasts a 1.6 percent recession in Angola this year, in a report on sub-Saharan Africa.

According to data from the report on capital flows in ten sub-Saharan African economies, including Angola, the Portuguese-speaking country's economy is expected to continue the decline started in 2016, recording a contraction of 1.6 percent this year, followed by growth of 1.9 percent next year.

In the report, sent to creditors and available to Lusa, the head of the economic research department for the region, Benjamin Hilgenstock, writes that "Sub-Saharan Africa's frontier markets are emerging from the pandemic shock, but the growth is comparatively weak".

For this year, the IFI forecasts that the ten analyzed countries in sub-Saharan Africa (Angola, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia) will grow by 3.5 percent, registering an expansion of 3 .7 percent in 2022.

"We project a strong recovery in the flow of non-resident capital to 53.5 billion dollars in 2021, compared to 21.1 billion dollars last year," analysts write, warning that "despite the recovery in investment External Direct is robust, persistently higher investments will be needed in the medium term".

In the document, they write that the International Monetary Fund, namely through the issuance of Special Drawing Rights, of "critical support" to the region, which will continue to deserve the support of multilateral financial institutions to sustain economic recovery, albeit at levels minors and with many conditions imposed.

Angola and Nigeria, benefiting from rising oil prices, the main source of revenue in the two countries, will face less funding risks, economists conclude.
