The coordinator of the National Management Committee of the Luanda Biennial said this Monday that the budget for the event, which runs from the 27th to the 30th of this month, “is no secret to anyone”, but, without disclosing the amount, assured “sparsimonious management ”.

According to Sita José, who spoke this Monday at a press conference on the preparations for the second edition of the Luanda Biennial – Pan-African Forum for the Culture of Peace –, the event's budget, "unlike the first edition, is no secret to no one".

"The National Assembly approved in January 2021 a budget allocation line that provides a budget ceiling", said this Monday the coordinator, when questioned by Lusa, without, however, announcing the amount.

"But to say that up to the present date, all the expenses we have made have simply taken into account the expenses for the functioning of the permanent secretariat, its equipment, some contractual commitments for the accessory and we are in one third of this budget", he stressed.

The second edition of the Luanda Biennial is an international event jointly organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), African Union (AU) and the Government of Angola between 27 and 30 of November in hybrid format.

"Art, Culture, Heritage: Levers for the Africa We Want" is the central motto of this Bienal, which should bring together more than 100 young leaders from all over Africa in spaces for reflection, exhibition, dissemination of artistic creations, good practices, ideas and knowledge related to the culture of peace.

The ambassador and coordinator of the Luanda Biennial also referred that the organization of the event "is very willing to carry out activities with a parsimonious management of the funds allocated to us".

"What will happen at this time, when we sign commitments with the organizers of the events, is that in this final stretch we will in fact have some relatively concentrated expenses, but even so we will still be far below the values approved by the National Assembly", he stressed.

Intergenerational Dialogue between Leaders and Youth, Festival of Cultures and Launch of the Alliance of Partners for a Culture of Peace are some of the axes of this Bienal, whose official opening act should include the presence of various statesmen and/or representatives from Africa and other continents.

The organization confirmed this Monday the presence of the president of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, the deputy director general of UNESCO, the deputy director general of UNESCO for Africa, the vice president of Costa Rica, Mozambique, South Africa, Kenya and Togo.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is scheduled to travel to Luanda to participate in this Luanda Biennial "whose effective confirmation should take place on Tuesday", as he told Lusa Sita José this Monday.

The statesmen and ministers present at the opening ceremony "should participate in an intergenerational dialogue panel with the young people present at the Bienal", stressed the official.

For his part, the international coordinator of the Luanda Biennial, Vicenzo Fazzino, praised the holding of the second edition of the event, noting that, following the Bienal, a "roadmap for the implementation of these emblematic initiatives" should be built.

"We found a number of partners, already with good themes, with future projects already programmed and who also showed interest in working together in search of synergies to develop projects within the Bienal's themes", he pointed out.

The Luanda Biennial aims to create "an alliance of committed partners that will contribute to the promotion of a culture of peace in Africa around a common cause: the future of the African continent".
