Initially called the Museo de la Huíla, it became known as the Museo Regional de la Huíla after the National Independence.
Founded in 1957 by Peixoto Correia, the museum's purpose was to collect, house, study and divulge subjects related to paleontology, archaeology and ethnography.
From 1975, when Angola became independent, the museum started to host an exclusive exhibition about the culture, habits, customs, beliefs and traditions of the people who lived in the south of the country.
