Built in 1604 by the Portuguese, this fortress was intended to ensure the defense of the prison - an establishment of military colonization.
Located in the municipality of Cambambe, in the province of Kwanza Norte, this fortress symbolizes the presence of Portuguese military forces in that territory. It also played an active role in the warehousing of goods and slaves.
Currently the Cambambe Fortress is in ruins, however, in 2016 was the target of preservation works by the Ministry of Culture.
