Bornito de Sousa says covid-19 pandemic conditions cooperation with São Tomé

The vice-president, Bornito de Sousa, said this Tuesday that the cooperation between Luanda and São Tomé is "conditioned" by the covid-19 pandemic, guaranteeing that "as soon as conditions exist" a "set of programs" that will strengthen this relationship will be implemented.

Bornito de Sousa, who went to the San Tomean capital to attend the funeral of the former vice-president of the San Tomean parliament, Alcino Pinto, was the bearer of a message from the president, João Lourenço, to his San Tomean counterpart, Evaristo Carvalho.

"I should just mention that in general, [the message] highlights the elevation and importance of cooperation between the two countries and peoples that is naturally conditioned by the covid-19 pandemic, but as soon as conditions exist, there are a number of programs and channels that must be implemented in order to strengthen cooperation between the two peoples and governments," said the governor.

He highlighted foreign relations, the energy sector and air transport as the areas where cooperation between Luanda and São Tomé stands out.

The vice-president, who returned to his country this Tuesday, had meetings with the Prime Minister of San Tome, Jorge Bom Jesus, and the President of the National Assembly, Delfim Neves, and was received in audience by the President of San Tome.

"The main objective was to deliver a message of his excellence, the President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, in order to convey the solidarity between the two peoples and the two governments," he explained to the press at the end of the meeting with Evaristo Carvalho, in Morro da Trindade, about ten kilometers from the capital, where the head of state is convalescing after undergoing surgery at the Military Hospital in Lisbon.

The vice-president went to the Sao Tome capital, leading a delegation from his country, to attend the funeral of the former vice-president of the National Assembly of Sao Tome and Principe, Alcino Pinto, who died on Thursday victim of cardiovascular arrest.

"It was an entity transversally recognized at the level of our country as someone of consensus, who sought unity of all political forces," said Bornito de Sousa, recalling that Alcino Pinto was a youth leader at the same time he was also a youth leader in Angola, so the two had a "particular relationship.
