According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in the 55 member states of the organization, 10,388 more cases of infection with the new coronavirus were registered in the last 24 hours.
The number of recovered people is now 1,597,140, 8337 more than the day before.
The largest number of cases of infection and deaths are recorded in Southern Africa, with 825,568 infections and 21,362 deaths from covid-19. In this region, South Africa, the continent's most affected country, accounts for a total of 738,525 cases of infection and 19,845 deaths.
North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has a total of 580,533 infected people and 15,828 killed and in East Africa there are 229,508 infected and 4461 fatalities.
In the West African region, the number of infections is 194,599, with 2796 fatalities, and Central Africa has 61,536 cases and 1,162 deaths.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 6380 deaths and 109,422 infected, followed by Morocco, which accounts for 4356 fatalities and 259,951 cases of infection.
Algeria followed, with 62,704 infections and 2061 deaths.
Among the six most affected countries are also Ethiopia, which has 99,982 cases of infection and 1,530 fatalities, and Nigeria, with 64,184 infected and 1,158 dead.
In relation to African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique has the highest number of cases.
Angola records 308 deaths and 12,680 cases, followed by Cape Verde (100 dead and 9419 cases), Mozambique (99 dead and 13,823 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 dead and 5102 cases), Guinea-Bissau (43 dead and 2419 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (16 dead and 962 cases).
