According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the 55 member states of the organization there have been more than 13,969 cases of covid-19 in the last 24 hours.
The number of recovered people is now 1,492,904, 8,862 more than the day before.
The largest number of cases of infection and deaths are recorded in Southern Africa, with 814,309 infections and 21,075 deaths from covid-19. In this region, South Africa, the continent's most affected country, accounts for a total of 730,548 cases of infection and 19,585 deaths.
North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has a total of 538,651 infected people and 14,848 killed and in East Africa there are 220,948 infected and 4052 fatalities.
In the West African region, the number of infections is 192,144, with 2783 fatalities, and Central Africa has 60,983 cases and 1,155 deaths.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 6318 dead and 108,329 infected, followed by Morocco, which counts 3982 fatal victims and 235,310 cases of infection.
Algeria followed, with 59,527 infections and 1999 deaths.
Among the six most affected countries are also Ethiopia, which has 97,881 cases of infection and 1503 fatalities, and Nigeria, with 63,328 infected and 1,155 dead.
Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique has the highest number of cases.
Angola records 296 deaths and 11,813 cases, followed by Cape Verde (95 dead and 9053 cases), Mozambique (95 dead and 13,283 cases), Equatorial Guinea (83 dead and 5089 cases), Guinea-Bissau (42 dead and 2414 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (16 dead and 958 cases).
