The meeting on Friday was chaired by the leader of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), João Lourenço.

Speaking to the press at the end of the meeting, the party spokesperson, Esteves Hilário, said that the CC is the competent body to convene the congress and decide its agenda.

Esteves Hilário stressed that the MPLA Political Bureau approved this Friday the indicative notes of what the congress should be, for the CC to assess and approve next Wednesday.

At the meeting on Friday, the general bases of the congress and the working committees were approved.

The MPLA spokesperson recalled that this extraordinary congress is not elective, stressing that its holding is related to "the need for the party to assess the 50 years of national independence".

Angola will celebrate its 50th anniversary of independence on 11 November 1975.

The meeting also served to analyse the creation of new provincial, municipal and communal structures, the recent appointment of some governors for other provinces and the changes in the country's new political and administrative division.

According to Esteves Hilário, the emergence of more provinces and municipalities will lead to the restructuring of the party's intermediate structures.

"Provincial committees will be created in the new provinces that have been created and we need to create the conditions for the installation of these structures in the new provinces that have been created, as well as in the new municipalities. We are talking about the party's municipal committees and some cases of communal committees, because there are districts that have been elevated to the category of communes", he added.
