Solar power plant and agricultural product processing center to be inaugurated in Huíla. More than 235 families benefited

A power plant, irrigation systems and an agricultural product processing center in the Humpata region, Huíla province, will be inaugurated next Thursday, benefiting more than 235 families. These inaugurations take place as part of a visit that a delegation made up of representatives from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the World Food Program (WFP) and the National Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (INEFOP) will carry out on the 9th and 10th of this month to Huíla.

The agenda for the delegation's visit, which is being carried out as part of the Renewable Energy Promotion Project, includes institutional meetings and inaugurations in the Matala and Humpata regions.

Thus, next Thursday, the Humpata region will see the inauguration of some systems linked to the energy and agriculture sectors.

"On October 10, the solar power plant, irrigation systems and the agricultural product processing centre will also be inaugurated in the Humpata region, benefiting more than 235 families in the Palanca community who now have access to clean energy", reads a statement sent to VerAngola.

However, the visit's programme begins the previous day, October 9, when the inauguration ceremony of the solar energy systems installed at the INEFOP training centre in Lubango and at the Cidadela de Jovens da Matala is scheduled, "which aim to promote technical and professional education adapted to local needs".

The ceremony, the statement said, will be attended by the governor of Huíla, Nuno Mahapi Dala, the president of INEFOP, Manuel Mbangui, the resident representative of UNDP in Angola, Denise António, and the representative of WFP, José Ferrão.

The visit's agenda, which falls within the scope of "the Renewable Energy Promotion Project, which aims to improve access to sustainable energy, generating new employment opportunities in rural areas", also includes "meetings with local authorities and partners".

Denise António, the resident representative of UNDP in Angola, highlighted the importance of this initiative for the "development of sustainable enterprises led by young people and women, by boosting both inclusive and sustainable regional growth and reducing economic inequalities", the statement reads.

The official also considered that "in addition to promoting climate resilience", the initiative is also in line with "UNDP's commitment to increase access to clean energy for 100 million people" on the African continent.

"In addition to promoting climate resilience, this initiative is aligned with UNDP's commitment to increase access to clean energy for 100 million people across Africa and facilitates access to decent work and improves the living conditions of communities in the regions, ensuring more opportunities for income generation, especially in artisanal production and processing processes," she said.

José Ferrão, representing WFP in Angola, said they were "grateful for the opportunity to be part of this initiative that demonstrates the profound impact of investments aimed at promoting access to sustainable energy not only in transforming communities and economic empowerment, particularly for young people and women, but also in promoting resilience to climate shocks."

It should be noted that the UNDP Renewable Energy Promotion Project has been strengthening "access to renewable energy and climate resilience in rural areas of Huíla and Benguela", and that, in addition to the installation of solar systems, the project also "includes the promotion of appropriate technical and professional education to empower cooperatives led by young people and women, helping them to better respond to small-scale business opportunities", as well as "contributing to smarter and more sustainable agricultural practices, increasing the promotion of energy and rural tourism", the note also states.
