President of the Assembly and Portuguese deputies in Luanda for the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

The president of the Assembly of the Republic (AR), Augusto Santos Silva, will lead the delegation of Portuguese deputies who will participate between the 23rd and 27th of October, in Luanda, in the 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP).

Augusto Santos Silva will also give a lecture on the theme “Angola – Portugal, two interconnected liberations” at the Catholic University of Angola, according to information published this Thursday on the websites of the Embassy of Portugal in Angola and AR.

The Portuguese delegation includes deputies Joaquim Barreto (PS), Carlos Pereira (PS), Carla Sousa (PS), Miguel Santos (PSD), João Azevedo (PS) and Vera Braz (PS).

Deputy Duarte Pacheco (PSD) will participate in the meeting as president of the UIP, according to official information, reaching the end of his three years in office.

Hundreds of parliamentarians from all over the world, including delegations from countries at war or in conflict situations, are expected in Luanda for the 147th General Assembly of the IPU, highlighting the general debate that will have as its theme parliamentary action in favor of peace, justice and strong institutions.

Another highlight of the agenda will be the election of a new president, with four candidates from African countries (Senegal, Malawi, Tanzania and Somalia) being presented for the first time.

The election will be held on October 27th by secret ballot.

The Cremer-Passy Prize will also be awarded to the deputy of the year who must have significant experience on climate action.

The second world parliamentary summit on Combating Terrorism and Violent Extremism will take place on October 25th, on the sidelines of the Assembly's work, which will highlight the deterioration of security in the Sahel region.

The Permanent Commission on Democracy and Human Rights will debate and work on a resolution on orphan trafficking.

The Portuguese delegation will also participate in meetings of the Geopolitical Group of 12+, and will meet with Portuguese-speaking countries, with a meeting planned with the Portuguese community residing in Luanda.

The IPU is made up of 179 national member parliaments and 14 regional parliamentary bodies.
