More than a thousand delegates already registered for the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Luanda

At least 1,170 delegates, from more than 80 countries and parliaments, are already registered to participate in the 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), which will take place in Luanda, between the 23rd and 27th of this month, it was announced.

The information was transmitted by Angolan deputy Idalina Valente, spokesperson for the event, during a press conference, stating that the meeting should bring together 1,400 delegates from 87 countries and 82 parliaments in the capital.

According to her, the event, which will take place under the motto “Parliamentary Action for Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”, should serve as a platform for sharing good practices on peace between deputies, international partner organizations and experts.

Idalina Valente highlighted that the IPU general assembly should also address actions to strengthen trust between people and governance structures, with a view to making public institutions more effective, responsible and representative for parliaments capable of facing multiple geopolitical crises.

The member parliaments of the IPU will also elect, at this meeting, the 31st president of the body, replacing the Portuguese Duarte Pacheco, with four candidates from African parliaments, namely Senegal, Malawi, Esuatini and Somalia, running for the position.

Several related meetings, on topics related to good governance, international peace and security, human rights, science, technology and the environment are also on the agenda of this meeting.

The event's spokeswoman also said she believes that UIP will take a step towards the Bahamas' membership as its 180th member parliament.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union, founded more than 130 years ago as the world's first multilateral political organization, is made up of 179 national member parliaments and 14 regional parliamentary bodies.

Angola hosts the meeting for the first time, which, according to Idalina Valente, will be attended by President João Lourenço.
