River border between Angola and Zambia reopens two years after closing

The river border between Angola and Zambia was reopened on Saturday, after about two years of being closed due to covid-19. The opening of this border will “minimize the great difficulties that the populations” faced “over the two years, motivated by the lack of access to large markets for the acquisition of various products and health services in the neighboring country”.

According to a note from the Municipal Administration of Rivungo, to which VerAngola had access, the official opening of the border between Rivungo, in Angola, and Shangombo, in Zambia, was presided over by the provincial governor of Cuando Cubango, José Martins, who he was accompanied by the municipal administrator of Rivungo, Abílio Jornal Sasongo, members of the provincial government, the municipal administration of Rivungo and the defense and security bodies.

On the Zambian side, the deputy administrator of Shangombo district, Nsankanga Shangwe, was present at the ceremony, representing the administrator of this locality, accompanied by local administration staff and police officers from that country.

According to the statement, the border closed in March 2020 due to the emergence of covid-19. However, taking into account that the "pandemic situation in the two countries" is under control, it was decided to open the border "with a view to making life easier for the populations of both countries".

"The opening of the border with the Republic of Zambia will minimize the great difficulties that the populations went through over the two years, motivated by the lack of access to large markets for the purchase of various products and health services in the neighboring country", adds the note.

The measure was applauded by the governor of Cuando Cubango, who quoted by Angop, considered that this opening will make it possible to improve trade, which will correspond to "immeasurable" gains that will be reflected in the economy of both countries and in the improvement of social conditions. of citizens.

He also took the opportunity to leave a word of encouragement to the defense and security means, in the sense of intensifying efforts to prevent and combat crimes.

On the Zambian side, the deputy administrator of Shangombo district, Nsankanga Shangwe admitted that this decision will provide well-being to the populations of both countries, writes Angop.
