Secretary for Social Affairs of the President of the Republic decorated by the Vatican

The Vatican Secretariat of State recently awarded the Secretary for Social Affairs of the President of the Republic, Fátima Viegas, with the Pontifical Medal of Dame of the Order of Saint Silvestre Pope. At the base of the award is the service provided by the person responsible for relations between Angola and the Holy See.

According to a statement from the Press Center of the Presidency of the Republic of Angola (CIPRA), to which VerAngola had access, when delivering the decoration, whose ceremony took place last Friday, "the Apostolic Nuncio to Angola and São Tomé , Archbishop Giovani Gaspari, highlighted the passion, competence and dedication of Fátima Viegas in the cause of relations between the two States with regard to the negotiation, signing and implementation of the Framework Agreement, becoming a point of reference for the bishops of Angola and for this Apostolic Nunciature".

Cited in the note, Bishop Giovani Gaspari also mentioned that this decoration – which was awarded directly by Pope Francis through a handwritten parchment in Latin – refers to "a gesture of thanks and recognition" to Fátima Viegas.

He also took the opportunity to emphasize that the Holy See is "grateful for this collaboration": "The Holy See is grateful for this collaboration, which we can rightly consider admirable. This gesture is, among others, a sign of the ancient friendship between the of Angola and the Holy See".

In turn, Fátima Viegas said "it is an honor and a privilege" to receive this medal.

"Throughout my professional life, I have performed only with a spirit of service. To serve and serve the community and the brothers. I did it with a spirit of mission, as a citizen, and I did it also as a Catholic Christian. do as long as God, our Lord, continues to give me life", he said, quoted in the note.

The Archbishop of Luanda, Archbishop Filomeno Vieira Dias, indicated that this recognition "confirms the attention with which Pope Francis follows things in Angola and Angola-Holy See relations", the note reads.

He added that "it is a sign of gratitude and public recognition for the personal commitment and dedication to the various dossiers between the Holy See and Angola, and between the State and the Church in Angola".

Attending the ceremony were the Minister of State for Social Affairs, Dalva Ringote, the Secretary of the President of the Republic for the Productive Sector, Isaac dos Anjos, the Minister of Education, Luísa Grilo, and bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST ), the statement said.

According to the note, the Order of Saint Sylvester Pope is an honorary order of the Vatican State, having been regulated in 1905 by Pope Pius X. It is conferred directly by the Pope to Catholics who "have distinguished themselves in the exercise of their profession, recommended by priests, bishops or Apostolic Nuncio".
