The information was provided by Carlos Cunha, head of Prumo – a company that took over the management of the farm last year under the Privatization Program – who indicated that they are resuming a "sleeping monster" in the field of agro-industry through initial cultivation of corn (800 hectares) and soybean (400 hectares).
So far, around eight million dollars have already been disbursed in the requalification of the main foundations of the farm, as well as in obtaining new agricultural tools, he informed, quoted by Angop.
The official, quoted by Angop, pointed out this year as being one of "great challenges", since they have to "put the farm in motion", having been working "since the beginning of the dry season" for this purpose.
"This year is one of great challenges, we have to put the farm in motion, we have been working since the beginning of the dry season on the deforesting of over 4200 hectares, correction and leveling of the soil, rehabilitation and consolidation of infrastructure", he said.
In addition, he also took the opportunity to mention prospects for roughly two years from now. An additional 12 million dollars is the amount the company plans to spend in 2024 to acquire and implement several irrigation pivots for around 2000 hectares of maize, in an action that will make it possible to harvest grain twice a year, writes Angop.
Fernando Hoffman, director of the farm, revealed that the restoration of the grain storage and drying silos is on the final stretch.
Also quoted by Angop, he also took the opportunity to mention that work on the recovery of the animal feed and cornmeal unit, capable of producing 40.000 tonnes a day, will soon begin.
He indicated that the industrial area was the most affected by acts of vandalism and admitted that the rehabilitation process may take time, but that they will work on its recovery. "The industrial area was the most vandalised, with the theft of dozens of motors, the fuba processing line, electrical cables and other means were damaged by the action of time", he said, quoted by Angop.
Regarding the agricultural means in use in the current agricultural year, he mentioned that they are new equipment, since little is taken advantage of the old ones.
The farm - which covers a total of 33 thousand hectares, has eight silos capable of storing 36 thousand tons of grain and employs more than 60 people - was inaugurated by the then President of the Republic José Eduardo Santos, having started to operate between 2006 and 2007.
Abandoned since 2016, the unit has been vandalized. However, last year, as part of the Privatization Programme, its management was entrusted to Prumo - Empreendimentos e Materials de Construção, which is currently reviving the project, writes Angop.
