Luanda: Church of Nossa Senhora das Graças robbed and vandalized

The parish of Nossa Senhora das Graças, in Luanda, was “robbed and vandalized” by alleged robbers, at dawn on Wednesday, who broke into the safe of the Catholic institution and withdrew all the money, informed the local parish priest.

:

Speaking to Radio Ecclesia, Father Rufino Tchitwe, parish priest of this Catholic church located in the Precol neighborhood, in the urban district of Rangel, lamented the situation, noting that the alleged robbers "broke the church door and the safe, from which they took all the values".

According to the priest, who says he is "saddened" by this action, the occurrence is the domain of the police authorities "who are already doing their job". "We hope that those involved will be held accountable," he said.

"We are very sad about this action, because it is a matter of public safety, hoping that the authorities will help us better safeguard this sacred place, so that we can have our usual devotions and celebrations here in our parish community," said Father Rufino Chitwe.

The bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST) have recently expressed concern about the high level of crime and insecurity in Angola, which last year affected more than 60 institutions of the Catholic Church.

The concern was expressed by the archbishop of Luanda and outgoing president of CEAST, Filomeno Vieira Dias, at the opening of the second plenary assembly of Catholic bishops, which took place in Luanda between 6 and 11 October.

The need for "improving the responsiveness of police agencies with means that allow better mobility and encouragement for agents" were some of the recommendations of the CEAST bishops to the corporation.

Luanda, with more than eight million inhabitants, has in recent days been experiencing a wave of robberies using firearms, resulting in deaths and injuries, a scenario that translates into a climate of insecurity that worries citizens.

This Thursday, the spokesman for the Luanda Provincial Command of the National Police announced that an alleged assailant was shot dead by the police and three others were lynched by people on Wednesday night, after attempted robberies on public roads .

Nestor Goubel, who regretted the facts, assured, however, that the corporation in Luanda from now on "will have no consideration for the assailants" and said that the reaction of the police "will be proportional to the extent of the threat they present".
