Police accidentally kill motorcycle taxi driver in Luanda and protest by colleagues wounded seven others

The death of a motorcycle taxi driver, shot by a traffic policeman, in the Benfica area, in Luanda, resulted in the wounding of seven other people, also by firearms, the police informed this Thursday.

According to the spokesman for the Luanda provincial command of the National Police, superintendent Nestor Goubel, the incident began when a traffic agent booked a driver, who allegedly pulled the block of fines from the policeman's hand and fled.

"Following, the traffic regulator went in pursuit of him so that [he] could deliver the respective block of fine", said Nestor Goubel, noting that the policeman, because the fugitive got into "some ways", needed to pick up the pistol, making shots.

"The resulting bullet from this shot inadvertently hit one of the motorcycle taxi drivers who was passing by at the time, of course this generated a wave of panic," he said.

The police spokesman said that the motorcycle taxi driver was taken to the Hospital Geral de Luanda, in the Golfe district, Kilamba Kiaxi district, to be assisted, with a group of colleagues following there.

At the hospital, motorcycle taxi drivers who went to the rescue or accompanied the injured colleague "began to commit acts of contempt for authority", said Nestor Goubel, stressing that the hospital has police personnel "to maintain order and allow professionals to health workers work at ease".

Nestor Goubel said that due to the contempt of motorcycle taxi drivers, one of the staff present at the Luanda General Hospital had fired shots, which hit seven citizens who were there at the time, including a deputy chief of the National Police, who shot in the lower left limb.

"The same citizens have already recovered, had only minor injuries, were assisted immediately and are already out of danger," he said, disapproving of the behavior of the moto-taxi drivers.

"It must be said that this conduct does not benefit the attitude of citizens when they had to complain about something. There are adequate institutions for this purpose", he stressed.

With regard to the two staff, according to Nestor Goubel, a case was opened to investigate the causes of what happened.

"The responsibilities will be determined from the inquiry, but it is reprehensible and we have to strongly repudiate this and say that the police must safeguard the normal functioning of establishments, State institutions, hospitals and others", he stressed.
