Samakuva convenes XIII UNITA congress for December 2nd, 3rd and 4th

UNITA president, Isaías Samakuva, convened the party's XIII Congress, where a new president is expected to be elected following the removal of Adalberto da Costa Júnior, for December 2, 3 and 4.

:

The call was announced on Wednesday night through the reading of a statement broadcast on TV Raiar.

The XIII Ordinary Party Congress will be held under the motto "Unity, Citizenship for Alternation" from December 2 to 4, 2021, in Luanda, announced Samakuva.

The conclave's agenda includes the following points: evaluating and redefining the party's ideological line, approving and adopting the party's strategy, program and objectives, reviewing the party's statutes and program, reviewing, if necessary, the symbols of the party. party, approve the reports on the functioning of the party presented by the outgoing bodies, elect the president of the party, elect the political commission, assess the performance of the party organs and deliberate on any matter of interest to the party.

This week, Isaias Samakuva was sworn in again as a member of the Council of the Republic, having received praise from President João Lourenço, who welcomed him and said he hopes that he "has come to stay".

Samakuva, who has repeatedly stated his intention not to re-candidate for the presidency of UNITA after having led the party's destinies for 16 years, rose again to the leadership following the Constitutional Court's decision that determined the annulment of the XIII Congress, held in 2019 and in which Adalberto da Costa Júnior was elected, thus dictating his removal.

Last week, the political commission of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the most important deliberative body between congresses, had already announced the holding of the conclave until 4 December, with the days still to be set.

The need to hold a new Congress was approved with 222 votes in favour, one vote against and 11 abstentions.

The scheduling of a new congress follows the annulment of the 13th Congress, in which Adalberto da Costa Júnior was elected by the Constitutional Court, which gave reason to a group of alleged militants of the "Black Rooster" party who asked for the president's removal due to alleged irregularities registered at the congress, namely the fact of having competed without giving up Portuguese nationality.

Adalberto Costa Júnior became the third president of the party, on November 15, 2019, winning more than 50 percent of the votes in a universe of 960 voters and winning four candidates: Alcides Sakala, Raul Danda (deceased this year), Kamalata Numa and José Pedro Catchiungo.
