In his message, João Lourenço referred that the victory achieved in the last elections, held last Sunday, confirms the people's confidence "in their leadership qualities strongly committed to the development of Cape Verde and to the improvement of the general conditions of life for the Cape Verdeans. -Verdians".
"I want, therefore, to express the desire that we continue to work together so that the relations between Angola and Cape Verde are raised to a level that corresponds to the interests and aspirations of our respective peoples", underlined the head of State in his message.
João Lourenço expressed his conviction that José Maria Neves, "will make efforts to realize, as widely as possible, the great desires for the progress and development of the Cape Verdean people".
The President also expressed the "best wishes for personal well-being and success in the noble mission of Head of State".
José Maria Neves, a 61-year-old university professor and former Cape Verdean prime minister, was elected in the first round in the presidential elections on Sunday, with 51.5 percent of the vote, according to data from the provisional tabulation.
Supported by the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), currently in opposition, José Maria Neves will be the fifth President of the Republic of Cape Verde, succeeding Jorge Carlos Fonseca, who is in his second and final term.
Carlos Veiga, also a former prime minister, who ran with the support of the ruling Movement for Democracy (MPD) and the Cape Verdean Independent and Democratic Union (UCID), won about 42.6 percent of the vote and failed the election for President of the Republic for the third time.
