Covid-19: Africa with 283 more deaths and 9554 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 283 deaths associated with covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 214,160, and 9554 new infections, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the cumulative total of cases of infection on the continent since the start of the pandemic is now 8,387,602 and that of recovered is 7,740,533, plus 7519 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,903,604 cases and 110,224 deaths associated with covid-19. In this region is the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,912,145 cases and 88,317 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, has reached 2,550,372 SARS-CoV-2 virus infections and 68,662 deaths associated with covid-19.

East Africa has 1,028,550 infections and 22,070 deaths, and the West Africa region has 653,553 infections and 9688 deaths. Central Africa has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 251,523 and 3516 respectively.

Tunisia, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 25,028 deaths and 709,834 infected, followed by Egypt, with 17,695 deaths and 312,413 cases, and Morocco, with 939,187 infections, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, 14,457 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are Ethiopia, with 5990 deaths and 354,476 infections, Algeria, with 5853 deaths and 204,597 people infected, and Kenya, with 5179 deaths associated with the disease and 251,152 accumulated infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique accounts for 1922 deaths associated with the disease and 150,985 infected accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola (1622 deaths and 61,378 cases), Cape Verde (346 deaths and 37,888 infections), Equatorial Guinea (154 deaths and 12,657 cases), Guinea-Bissau (141 dead and 6119 infected) and São Tomé and Príncipe (56 deaths and 3613 infections).
