Australian miner names new director with connection to Angola

Pensana Rare Earths Plc announced the appointment of British baroness Lindsay Northover as non-executive director of the Australian mining company that is developing a precious metals research project in Angola.

:

In a statement, Pensana recalled that Lindsay Northover was until recently the British Prime Minister's commercial envoy to Angola.

The diplomat "was at the center of the recent successful development of the bilateral United Kingdom-Angola relationship," said the Australian company.

In 2018, Lindsay Northover and then Finance Minister Archer Mangueira signed a financing agreement with an English bank for the construction of the first phase of the Cabinda General Hospital, the Pediatric Hematological Institute of Luanda and the first phase of the General Hospital of Luanda. Pediatrics in the capital.

Lindsay Northover's involvement "in Angola's economic and political transformation over the past four years will be an enormous asset for the company," said Paul Atherly, president of Pensana, cited in the note.

The official linked the appointment of the British baroness with Pensana's plans to establish in the UK "the first sustainable chain for the production of magnetic metals in the world", to support the manufacture of electric vehicles and wind turbines.

Pensana's "environmentally sustainable" position is especially valuable for Angola as it seeks to diversify "the economy beyond oil exploration, Lindsay Northover said in the statement.

In September, Pensana announced that the Angola Sovereign Fund will invest an additional US $ 8.6 million in the precious metals research project in Longonjo, in the province of Huambo.

In April last year, it was reported that the prospecting for minerals in Longonjo, which lasted for about two years, made it possible to identify 23 billion tonnes of valuable metals, known as Rare Lands.

Among the most outstanding characteristics of this type of metal are the conduction of heat and electricity, in addition to being structures that are highly magnetizable.

Its chemical and physical properties are used in a wide variety of technological applications and are incorporated in superconductors, magnets, catalysts, among others.

These are ores that guarantee unique characteristics to several types of metal alloys, such as iPhone mobile phones, hybrid cars, lasers, among others.

The consumption of these minerals, worldwide, reaches 150 thousand tons / year.

The types of metals known as Rare Lands reach 17. However, six types are better known: neodymium, lanthanum, praseodymium, gadolinium, samarium and cerium.

China is the main producer and market for the ore.
