Covid-19: Africa with 117 more deaths and 9123 infections in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded a further 117 deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, with a total of 41,262 deaths, and the number of infected has risen to 1,716,864, according to the most recent pandemic data on the continent.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the 55 member states of the organization there were 9123 more infected and the number recovered rose 7290 in the last 24 hours, to a total of 1,406,528.

Southern Africa continues to register the highest number of infections and deaths, with 792,570 infected and 20,403 dead. In this region, South Africa alone, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 715,868 cases and 18,968 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has 472,367 infected people and 13,193 deaths and in East Africa there are 204,718 infected and 3803 fatalities.

In the West Africa region the number of infections is 187,449, with 2730 deaths, and in Central Africa there are 59,760 cases and 1133 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, has 6199 deaths and 106,540 infections, and Morocco has 3301 deaths and 197,481 cases of infection.

Algeria follows with 56,143 infections and 1914 deaths.

Among the six countries most affected are Ethiopia, with 93,343 infections and 1426 deaths, and Nigeria, with 61,992 infections and 1130 deaths.

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique in number of cases.

Angola registers 268 deaths and 9381 cases, followed by Cape Verde (94 deaths and 8396 cases), Mozambique (86 deaths and 11,986 cases), Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 5079 cases), Guinea-Bissau (41 deaths and 2403 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 deaths and 935 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 1.1 million deaths and almost 42.7 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a balance sheet made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
